Don’t CRNAs already have independent practice in Georgia? Doesn’t this legislation mainly impact Anesthesiologists?

Although CAAs are accustomed to seeing CRNAs practice in a medical supervision model under an Anesthesiologist like CAAs practice, Georgia Law currently allows CRNAs to be medically directed by either an anesthesiologist or non-anesthesia trained physician, such as a surgeon, as long as the non-anesthesia trained physician is aware that he or she is assuming responsibility and liability for the CRNA.

Why is independent practice harmful to patients?

Physician Anesthesiologists receive 12,000-14,000 hours of patient care during training compared to the 1,650 hours a CRNA acquires during training. Georgians deserve a highly trained physician anesthesiologist supervising their care in the Anesthesia Care Team model. As CAAs, we recognize that two providers are better and safer than one when an emergency occurs!

Will independent practice save healthcare costs?

The patient is billed the same amount if a CRNA is medically directed by a non-anesthesia trained physician compared to a physician anesthesiologist supervising a CRNA or CAA in the Anesthesia Care Team model. In addition, physician anesthesiologist-led care saves costs by reducing unnecessary tests and medical consultations while improving patient outcomes, such as avoiding unplanned postoperative hospital admissions.

Didn’t CMS remove physician oversight during the COVID-19 pandemic?

There was no executive order in Georgia removing physician oversight during the COVID-19 pandemic. The executive order in Georgia allowed both CRNAs and CAAs to practice outside of their typical OR setting to provide care in ICUs or critical care units. CRNAs were not performing anesthesia independently under the executive order in Georgia
