Nominee for President:

Joy Rusmisell, AA-C

I am a Georgia native, and have spent most of life living in the metro Atlanta area. I graduated from Nova Southeastern University with a Masters of Health Science after making a career change; having spent 7 years in business upon graduating from the University of Georgia. Currently, I live in Macon, GA and enjoy my dream job at the Medical Center of Central Georgia. I have had the honor of serving Georgia AAs as the President of the GAAA over the last year. During this time, we have enjoyed many successes including hosting the first AA Day at the Capitol, partnering with the GSA for a dual membership for AA members, recognition on the national level as a model state organization by the AAAA, and educating the medical community of the importance of the AAs role in the Anesthesia Care Team by providing high quality safe anesthesia care. The passion for my career is the cornerstone for my involvement in the GAAA. I would like to continue being instrumental in ensuring that Georgia AAs have representation on a local, state, and national level. I believe it is imperative to continue the growth of our organization in order to withstand the changing environment of our healthcare system.

I am honored to be nominated for President of the Georgia Academy of Anesthesiologist Assistants, and it is my goal to represent the GAAA membership with integrity, vigilance, and strength as I serve as your voice.

I have been an active member of the AAAA since graduation and served as the Jobline listing coordinator for many years. I have become very active in the GAAA over the last ten months and am currently serving as the Communications Chairperson writing the GAAA newsletter and keeping the website and social media updated.

My husband and I live in Savannah with our two boys Dean (9) and Walt (7), and we keep busy with youth sports, school activities where I am the outgoing president of the PTA, and enjoying the coastal lifestyle. I would be honored to serve as GAAA Secretary and to continue the great work that has been started by the outgoing officers and Board of Directors.

Nominee for Student Representatives:

Laura Birch, AA-S (Emory University)

My medical interest blossomed during a mission trip to Nicaragua and Honduras over the summer of 2011. I served with a medical team traveling to remote villages, mountainous areas and inner cities providing direct healthcare to those who otherwise would not receive it. During my time there, living in homestays by night and working in clinics by day, I learned a great deal about the people, their culture, and myself.

I learned that I had a passion for healthcare and for helping people. I also realized my deep interest in learning Spanish—a goal that I have yet to achieve, but hope to work towards more after school. I believe that those of us who have the skills, knowledge and ability to help others should leverage those talents to do the most good for as many people as possible. There is no better place to use my talents than anesthesia, where my love for science meets my passion for people. I have found anesthesia to be like no other. An anesthetist has a unique opportunity to build relationships and trust with patients in a high stakes environment. I thrive on the continuous patient interaction and believe guiding fearful patients from induction to recovery is both an honor and a privilege. Every day is different and each case requires a new way of thinking. I value that anesthesia care is tailored to each person as an individual. My sincere desire is to be that light of hope at what might be a difficult time in another person’s life.

Aside from school and working in the clinical setting, I enjoy photography, Braves baseball, cooking and playing tennis. Being from a small town in South Georgia, I love the outdoors and having a sense of community. I do love to travel and have participated in two mission trips thus far. This is something I hope to continue with my anesthesia training. My hope is to forever be learning something new and striving to be better.

Stephen Whitesides, AA-S (South University)
